Navy STEM for the Classroom, created in partnership with America’s Navy, is a series of interactive classroom resources designed for 9-12 graders to explore the world of STEM through real Navy careers. If your students are curious about applying their learning to actual STEM careers like a Naval Aviator, Electronics Technician or Nuclear Propulsion Engineer, then these free digital resources are perfect for your high school classroom!
JUST LAUNCHED! Through Navy STEM Challenges, students are asked to complete three different Navy training exercises led by a Navy officer. Each mission includes a unique objective:
- Helicopter Rescue
Examine the science behind timing jumps and dives into the sea from a helicopter to execute a successful rescue. Students will use meteorological and oceanographic knowledge as well as hurricane formation, trajectory mapping and the free fall equation to guide rescue swimmers into the water. - Drone Surveillance
Explore innovative technologies to help a disaster relief team collect, survey and monitor information. Students will apply the properties of waves within the context of earthquakes (seismic waves), and electromagnetic radiation (e.g. satellites and radar) and gain insight into how unmanned aircraft enable the Navy to safely assess hazards in a disaster area before sending in a ground team. - Disease Control
Design and execute plans for controlling the spread of a vector-borne disease through surveillance techniques. Students will then brief the Marines about insect-related threats they may encounter during a mission in the area.
Through Navy STEM Challenges, careers in the Navy can align and enhance what we teach in the classroom. Each mission is aligned to national standards in STEM and introduces students to avenues for pursuing highly-skilled, hands-on careers. Our educator companion guide provides discussion questions and additional challenges for students to explore.
