#CelebrateWithDE – Halloween

Halloween can take over like a crowd of zombies. This year, go with the flow with resources to slake students’ thirst for all things Halloween in every core subject area. Work with the resources we’ve collected below and then dare your students to create their own versions of Halloween challenges. Finally, send your students on a virtual trick or treating trip in their own Discovery Education accounts to find creepy, crawly, eerie media in their favorite subject areas and about their favorite topics. Trick, treat, or digital resource – have a Happy Halloween!

APPLY

Engage your students’ excitement about Halloween by letting them create their own versions of some of the resources they’ve been working with. Encourage students to create original Halloween-based math problems, scientific experiments, stories, and research questions. Begin the session(s) by setting the Halloween atmosphere with sound using the SOS Surround Sound (Canadian Version) from our Spotlight on Strategies series. Here are a few sound effects you might use…there are many more: Weather: Wind: Eerie Wind Horror (Canadian Version), Weather: Wind: Ghost Town Wind Horror (Canadian Version). Consider adapting the strategy to include background music for the whole session.

Then, using the resources in the Learn section as models, have students design experiments with Halloween themes; write math problems for each other featuring pumpkins, candy, ghosts, etc.; summarize an original story like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with narration; or research a potentially deeply creepy aspect of Halloween history. Please share your students’ work on social media using #CelebrateWithDE.
