Engage your students’ excitement about Halloween by letting them create their own versions of some of the resources they’ve been working with. Encourage students to create original Halloween-based math problems, scientific experiments, stories, and research questions. Begin the session(s) by setting the Halloween atmosphere with sound using the SOS Surround Sound (Canadian Version) from our Spotlight on Strategies series. Here are a few sound effects you might use…there are many more: Weather: Wind: Eerie Wind Horror (Canadian Version), Weather: Wind: Ghost Town Wind Horror (Canadian Version). Consider adapting the strategy to include background music for the whole session.
Then, using the resources in the Learn section as models, have students design experiments with Halloween themes; write math problems for each other featuring pumpkins, candy, ghosts, etc.; summarize an original story like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with narration; or research a potentially deeply creepy aspect of Halloween history.
