Emily’s Story
My sixth grade math students have been struggling with dividing fractions, and I’ve found that one of their challenges is remembering the problem-solving steps in the correct order.
After attending Rodney Crouse‘s session on SOS Strategies in Math at the Charlotte, NC Day of Discovery this year, I decided that using a Hook ‘Em (CDN Version) and Paper Slides (CDN Version) mashup would encourage them to have a little fun while learning the correct steps.
Using the Strategy
I wanted my students to understand the process for dividing a fraction, and was especially interested in finding a method for allowing students to choose problems that were appropriate to their varying ability levels.
I chose SOS Hook ‘Em because it allowed me to differentiate the questions by color coding them according to their complexity. When students went fishing for problems, I encouraged them to fish for specific colors according to their specific needs.
In addition, I wanted to know that students understood the process for dividing fractions, so I incorporated SOS Paper Slide as a way for students to explain how they solved the problems. This allowed me to assess their understanding.
Strategy Outcomes
My students absolutely loved this approach. They enjoyed going fishing to pick the division problems, and they loved the Paper Slide videos where they could hear voices and view illustrations of the problems.
We used FlipGrid to share the videos, which provided a way for students to give feedback to one another. Even my administrator joined in the fun by going fishing for her own math problems creating her own Paper Slide video, too!
I was pleased that every student passed their formal assessment on dividing fractions for this unit. It was a powerful and fun way to approach a rather dull subject.
