#CelebrateWithDE Veterans Day & Remembrance Day

Honor and remember our heroes on Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada, both on November 11, by connecting to the history of bravery and sacrifice. We’ve gathered curated resources from Discovery Education that will help you and your students focus on the courageous people that have fought to counter attacks and maintain our freedoms. The content collections are full of a wide variety of media for every grade level and are a good place to start for broad understanding.

Use these resources to encourage your students to develop an understanding of the holidays, the important contributions of veterans and reasons we celebrate and honor them, and some of the myths that still linger about the wars they fought. Consider using an instructional strategy from our Spotlight on Strategies series to help students work with the source material. Get Your Thinking Hat On (Canadian Version) provides students with a specific perspective from which to consider the media, Whittle It Down (Canadian Version) lets students work together to identify key information, and A-E-I-O-U (Canadian Version) asks students to react to the information in a variety of ways.

Once your students have had a chance to see and work with the material, have them discuss what characteristics and traits are necessary to have strong and successful armed forces. Use an instructional strategy such as Step Inside (Canadian Version) with some of the media above to help students imagine the range of experiences veterans may have and the kinds of behavior and sacrifices we honor them for. Consider having students write cards for a local veterans’ organization to distribute or communicating their appreciation through social media. Share your students’ sentiments using #CelebrateWithDE on social media!
