We’re celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All of his contributions towards ensuring civil rights for everyone in the community are well worth honoring, and our focus this year will be on actions that can be taken in service to the community. We hope you’ll have wonderful discussions about the power of ordinary people to make the world a better place for all.

Have students think more deeply about the progress made by Dr. King and issues we are still facing by using the strategy Paper Chat. Provide prompts on large pieces of butcher or poster paper and allow students to discuss in writing questions such as these: What allowed MLK to be successful in his efforts?, Why were MLK’s ideas so influential?, What would MLK be doing if he were alive and working today?
Then, since our focus this year is on service for the health of the community, have students think about projects they might like to spearhead in their own communities, whether that is the classroom, the school, or the larger community. Have them articulate their idea and give it a title (or explain it in six words, using an adaptation of the strategy Six Word Story).
